During the coronavirus shut down, Opera Australia has been busy taking stock and has announced it is clearing thousands of old costumes and props from retired productions that will no longer be used. These items will be put on sale to the public with prices starting as low as $2.
The sale will take place at OA’s storehouse in Alexandria, which the Company recently announced was being put up for sale due to the impact of the pandemic. So all stock must go. The COVID-safe sale will run over two weekends with pre-booked hourly sessions to ensure no over-crowding.
Stock will be continually replenished with more than 5,000 costumes and props looking for new homes. Customers may only purchase up to 15 costumes and 5 props each. Many of the quirky costumes have been made by hand in OA’s wardrobe department.
It’s a great opportunity to bolster the fancy dress collection, with items ranging from military style coats, handcrafted period gowns, animal costumes, hats and some rather risqué bondage pieces.
The props for sale range from the sublime to the ridiculous. There’s aeroplane seats, a life sized prop horse and a vintage army bed. Paintings, cupid sculptures, daybeds, a chaise lounge and a variety of tables also available. Large prop items can’t be taken on the day and must be booked in for collection the following week.
