I am a musician who specialises in playing the Pipa – a Chinese lute. I began my musical journey at the age of 5, and over the years, I have had the privilege of performing in various countries including China, the US, and now Australia, where I have recently relocated.

Originally hailing from Shanghai, China, I completed my bachelor’s degree at the Shanghai Theatre Academy, with a focus on Pipa Performance. After spending 3 years in the Pipa performing industry, I embarked on a new chapter by pursuing my first master’s degree in performing arts management in New York. This experience allowed me to immerse myself in American culture and Western values, enriching my perspective.

While I am proficient in playing traditional instruments, I consider myself anything but a traditional musician. My passion lies in blending diverse genres into my music and creating innovative performance styles. I am also enthusiastic about collaborating across different fields, combining the beauty of the Pipa with various industries. I am driven by the desire to break away from the monotony of playing traditional pieces on stage, as I believe in exploring new possibilities.

My unique background, bridging my Asian heritage with my exposure to Western countries, as well as my extensive international work experiences, set me apart from my peers.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
Continue thinking outside the box. Throughout the years, I have consistently pushed boundaries, refusing to be confined by the conventional musician’s role. My aspiration extends beyond the confines of traditional music; I envision synergies between music and fashion, music and technology, music and culinary arts, music and nature – the possibilities are boundless. I firmly believe that the fusion of diverse fields and cultures is the path forward, and this conviction underpins my artistic philosophy.

This commitment to innovation is driving me to pursue my second master’s degree, this time specializing in Marketing – a departure from my previous industry. I am determined to embrace change and thrive in an ever-evolving landscape.

Who inspires you and why?
I am drawn to individuals who possess a growth mindset and a positive attitude. Engaging in conversations with them feels natural and reassuring, as I find joy in sharing my unique values and perspectives. These interactions become meaningful opportunities for exchanging opinions and insights, creating a mutual learning experience that enriches both sides.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
My experiences, my vision, my footprints spanning the globe, my creativity, values, and mindset – all these components converge into one entity: my music. It is my aspiration that the amalgamation of my emotions and thoughts finds expression through my musical compositions, resonating deeply with my audiences. My ultimate hope is to kindle a heightened interest in both my instrument and music among a wider audience.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Los Angeles is a place that holds a special significance for me. I had the privilege of calling it home for a couple of years. The sun-soaked landscapes, the graceful palm trees, the inviting beaches, and the vastness of the sea all contribute to its unique and appealing ambiance. I also have a fondness for the climate, which bears a resemblance to Sydney’s. It’s in these warm and welcoming environments that I find a deep sense of contentment and happiness.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
The Sydney Opera House is a true masterpiece in architecture that I hold in high regard. Its design is a work of art in itself, captivating and inspiring. As a devoted admirer of classical music, I derive immense pleasure from attending live concerts there. I’m eagerly anticipating the opportunity to share this remarkable experience with my fellow musician friends.

What are you currently reading?
Principles by Ray Dalio.

What are you currently listening to?
Meditation and classical music.

Happiness is?
The instant I maximise my values is the moment I accomplish my set goals and prepare for the next milestone. It’s also the moment when I am surrounded by the love, care, and support of people I hold in high regard, those whom I trust, love, and respect.

What does the future hold for you?
The future is a blend of uncertainty and infinite possibilities. It resembles an unfinished painting, where the true composition remains a mystery until the final brushstroke is applied. Anticipation fills me as I eagerly look ahead to my future.
