On the Couch with Will Ewing

Will-Ewing-AAR-On-the-CouchWho is Will Ewing?
I’m the youngest of 10 kids from the family farm in the beautiful Western District of Victoria. Father a sheep farmer, mother a musician & teacher. Grew up to the echoes of Celtic folk, jazz standards, the Beatles and Neil Finn. A deep love of music and performing came from there. I am a father of two, a husband, and a self-professed renaissance man. I have a long history of performing, but now, amongst a few other things, I am Venue Director of the beautiful Brunswick Ballroom.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
If it weren’t for COVID I would most likely still be pursuing my first career as an actor and musician. I still play when I can with my band September 87 and take on other passion projects when I have the time. I’m a creative at heart so if I had to pivot again, I would most likely stay in the arts. I also have dreams of buying some land in Western Victoria and getting back to my sheep farming roots one day…

Who inspires you and why?
My beautiful wife and children… The immense love I have for them, and the want and desire to provide them with a wonderful life keeps me inspired and motivated.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I think we can all make changes in our own local communities that have a significant impact on the wider world. For me, I try to involve myself within the local arts and music scene and give back where I can. I’ve always had an interest in local politics… maybe one day I’ll run for Mayor of Merri-Bek! They could do with a good old shake up!

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Nashville (East Nashville) is second only to Melbourne as the music capital of the world. The music is richly brilliant, the history is fascinating, the people and southern hospitality is second to none. I need to get back!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I would show off some of this city’s great classic pubs (The Standard in Fitzroy, Goldie’s Tavern in Collingwood, Tramways in Fitzroy North), observe some of the colourful characters, have a bite to eat, find a rooftop bar, visit the theatre, end up at a late-night gig, maybe Cherry Bar or Shot Kickers… then off to bed! I’m up at 5:30AM these days with the bubs!

What are you currently reading?
The Dry – Jane Harper.

What are you currently listening to?
I have fallen back in love with Sam Evian, N.Y state producer songwriter – described as indie rock, “crunchy country,” and “70s-tinged psychedelic soft rock. Henson Cargil – I have had Skip a rope on repeat. The Slingers – A lot of pretenders… these guys are the real deal. Indie rock Melbourne-based current band. Imagine if young Paul Kelly, synth pop and Bruce Springsteen had a baby. Sincerely. The sky is the limit for these guys. Exceptional humans as well.

Happiness is?
My wife and children, a country drive & a big sleep in!

What does the future hold for you?
Exciting challenges, new friends, and wonderful projects
