On the Couch with Veronica Cloherty

I would describe myself as a multidisciplinary artist working as an actor but also creating through other mediums such as writing, visual arts and filmmaking. Currently touring the release of my first lead role in a feature film, Streets of Colour.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I would be less hard on myself. When I was young my father use to say to me ‘put the stick down, stop beating yourself up’. It’s a habit I haven’t quite kicked, but I’m learning to be kind and patient with myself as I get older.

Who inspires you and why?
I’m often inspired by people I meet or see in life who embrace genuine self-expression and are unapologetic. As for people, Greta Gerwig, the ultimate triple threat, Emily Blunt for playing me in The Devil Wears Prada and marrying John Krasinski. On a serious note, though I really admire her career and hope to follow a similar trajectory.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
As an artist, I’m driven to connect with people through film. This medium allows audiences to truly feel seen, acknowledged, deeply understood, and sometimes confronted by important messages. I’ve always thought that going to a dark room to watch a movie is an incredibly intimate and personal experience. My purpose is to be a part of creating that art that allows people to deeply connect with their humanity.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I’ve travelled to many places, and so far, Hawaii is my favourite – incidentally, it was also my last holiday back in 2019. I’m drawn to the island’s energy; there’s something about the islands slow pace, being near an active volcano and spending two weeks off the grid in nature that was truly calming for me. I will definitely be going back! In the meantime, I have a trip to Thailand planned in two weeks, and I can’t wait! (I’ve already packed my bag #keen.)

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
It depends on the friend. Some of my favourite places are: my apartment for a game of backgammon and an introduction to my cats – Baby and Angel, the Bondi Coastal Walk, Gordons Bay for a swim, Totti’s for the bread, Icebergs for the view, the North Bondi grassy knoll for sunset, the ferry from Rose Bay to the city for the bridge, The Art Gallery of NSW, Belvoir Theatre for a show, Hubert’s for the band and the oysters, Old Mates for a drink, and Sussudio for a dance. In that order.
