Who is Valerie Hex?
Valerie Hex is a the director of YUMMY. Her friend’s call her VAL… think “very attractive lunatic.”
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I have fantasies about renovating run-down mansions. Both haunted and un-haunted.
Who inspires you and why?
I’ve always loved Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. She really was the epitome of art star in my eyes. She connected all kinds of people who might not otherwise have been in the same spaces. Her style and artistry were quite influential while I was growing up.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I always vote in the best interests of our most vulnerable populations, practice daily generosity, and commit to helping people feel better, safer, and more tolerant of groups outside their experience. Corny, but true!
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Split, Croatia. The coastline is gorgeous! The food is amazing!
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I really love taking people to Smith and Gertrude in Fitzroy as it’s the new gaybourhood and it’s full of amazing shopping, nightlife, and wonderful people.
What are you currently reading?
10 Steps to Nanette by Hannah Gadsby. What a legend!
What are you currently listening to?
Dorian Electra. One of the most interesting and wild musicians in a long time.
Happiness is?
Undefinable! But it’s definitely a journey and not a destination.
What does the future hold for you?
Hopefully lots of drag cabaret, good friends, and good times! I’d like to direct more shows and make another film. For now, I’m giving YUMMY everything I have!
