Who is Tom Sharah?
I ask myself this a lot. But let’s avoid existentialism and go with facts – I am a singer, actor, very strong mover who is based in Sydney but has lived the showgirl life, followed the gigs and essentially lived out of a suitcase for the better part of a decade. It’s a mad life but I love it.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
Regrets? I have a few. But overall, I am pretty fulfilled and content at the moment especially with what I “do”. I am on tour in Velvet Rewired which is a disco extravaganza comprising singing, dancing, aerial, circus and a shit load of glitter. I’m singing some of the greatest songs of all time opposite the incomparable Marcia Hines and having a ball. So honestly I’m where I want to be right now.
Who inspires you and why?
These days I am most inspired by a good work ethic. I am repelled by inherent complainers, lazy performers and entitled people. I have worked with some true legends of the stage and the most common denominator between them (apart from their talent, of course) is that they work hard, and they treat everyone with kindness, respect and a generosity of spirit. I try to bring the “happy to be here, easy to work with” vibes as much as possible.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
It’s easy to feel helpless when there is so much frightening and inhumane stuff happening in the world. But if the theatre can feel like a safe space for people who are struggling and bring any kind of solace and joy at a time when there is so much fear and anxiety, I feel grateful to be part of that transaction.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
There is a magic and electricity to NYC that can’t be beat.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
During summer, a ferry ride into Circular Quay followed by drinks at Opera Bar overlooking the Harbour Bridge is peak Sydney. And from 22 December you can head down to The Studio at Sydney Opera House post-cocktail and come see Velvet Rewired! That is a fierce day out.
What are you currently reading?
I’m big into autobiographies at the moment. The last two I’ve read are Bryan Cranston and Sporty Spice. And that says a lot about me.
What are you currently listening to?
I’m all about the podcasts. Smartless is an interview series hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett. I have fallen in love with it, and all of them.
Happiness is?
Not guaranteed so when you truly feel it, ENJOY IT.
What does the future hold for you?
Traveling the country bringing this red-hot disco inferno to the people! We’re heading to a city near you so come visit boogie wonderland.
