On the Couch with Timothy Sherlock

Timothy Sherlock AAR On the CouchWho is Timothy Sherlock?
I am a music educator, choral and handbell conductor and composer/arranger.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I’d love to explore more opportunities to work in Arts in Health programs. I believe the arts can have a profound effect on health outcomes and the more work I do with community choirs (particularly with older Australians), the more I see the positive health effects that community arts engagement can achieve.

Who inspires you and why?
I direct a choir at the Queensland Children’s Hospital for staff, volunteers and community members. I am constantly inspired by the medical staff at the hospital – the amazing nurses, emergency doctors, anaesthetists and all of the allied health professionals. They do a wonderful job with true passion and dedication to their vocation to improve the health outcomes of the children in their care.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I would just like to encourage kindness as a default attitude or point of view. Sometimes it seems that we are surrounded by so much cynicism, fear and anger… if we could just approach each day with a sense that we as individuals can make a difference by reframing our own attitude, who knows what impact it can have on others? Kindness is such an important virtue.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I really love visiting Japan. I have been there many times over the years – the aesthetics, history, culture, food and friendly people make it an absolute joy to visit. And there is so much to explore: the forests, the cities, the islands, the mountains.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Brisbane’s South Bank and Cultural Precinct is such a vibrant and interesting place to visit. Centrally located on the Brisbane River with many great restaurants, beautiful parklands, even a sandy beach and lagoon! It’s an incredible public space right in the centre of the city with green space and culture at its heart.

What are you currently reading?
RuPaul’s latest memoir, The House of Hidden Meanings… a fascinating insight into someone who has made real changes to the global cultural landscape.

What are you currently listening to?
I am currently immersed in a disco playlist. QPAC Chamber Choir is about to present a show based on the evolution of disco from the mid-70s right up to contemporary disco tracks (such as Dua Lipa’s Dance The Night from the Barbie movie!)

Happiness is?
Enjoying a beautiful day with loved ones (and with no work deadlines looming!)

What does the future hold for you?
Hopefully, a life of good health, happiness and creativity!

Timothy is the Choral Director of the QPAC Chamber Choir – who will present Studio ’24 – A Disco Choir Experience in the Concert Hall – QPAC on Tuesday 13 August 2024. For more information, visit: www.qpac.com.au for details.
