Who is Tim Hill?
Well, I’m a theatre director who has found his way home to South East Queensland after many years. But more importantly, I’m a dad to two beautiful boys, Archie and Ollie, and a slightly absent husband to my wonderful wife, Deanna. I love travel, I’m a bit of a foodie, and my not-so-secret obsession is Arsenal Football Club. I love to tell stories in unique ways, and theatre, particularly musical theatre, gives me that opportunity. I feel incredibly lucky that I get to do this for a living.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
That is a great question. I’d love to do a travel/food blog. I know there are millions out there, but I could talk about travel and food adventures forever.
Who inspires you and why?
My wife inspires me. She is a creative person as well and also runs a very successful business, yet she is the most loving and dedicated mother. Her commitment to all parts of her life, along with her never-ending love and energy, is truly inspiring.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I’d love everyone to listen to each other more. I think people are often so caught up in voicing their opinions that a little more listening and a little more empathy, would make a big difference.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
It’s a tie between New York and London. Pretty obvious answers, perhaps, but both give me theatre, food, culture, sport, and unbelievable energy all in one place.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
With two young kids at home, it’s more likely to be a dinner party these days. However, my favourite little escape and one I love to show off, is a suburb called Tugun, at the southern end of the Gold Coast. It’s not as much of a hidden secret as it used to be, but I genuinely believe it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.
What are you currently reading?
I’m currently directing a production of Into the Woods, which will open the new Ad Astra venue in September. Working on this beautiful and deeply complex show has made me even more fascinated by the genius of its composer, Stephen Sondheim. So I’m reading his compelling autobiography Look, I Made a Hat.
What are you currently listening to?
To prepare for & JULIET and because let’s be honest, it’s the greatest era of pop music – I’m neck-deep in late ’90s/early 2000s pop and loving every second of it.
Happiness is?
My family, my boys.
What does the future hold for you?
Lots of happiness, I hope. More time with my family, the opportunity to direct interesting and challenging shows, more chances to travel and taste the cuisines of the world, and making the most of every moment with those who matter most.
Tim is the Director of & JULIET – which will be presented at The Empire, Toowoomba, in March 2026. Cast applications open 15 September 2025. For more information, visit: www.empiretheatre.com.au for details.
