Who is Tim Barnes?
Tim Barnes is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Scimm. Dance Company.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I think if I could do something different it would be to be outside more! I grew up on a farm and have always loved being on the land, but dancing keeps me stuck indoors a lot.
Who inspires you and why?
My beautiful friends and family! My mum would be one of my biggest inspirations, she has experienced a lot of loss in her life including both her first and second husbands, including my father. Yet everyday she finds joy in the world around her. I aspire to be as giving and loving as she is. I am also inspired by my Co-Director Scott, I couldn’t do what I do without him, he is bold, daring and incredibly loyal.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
To make a difference in this world I would bring the arts to more people. Art has the power to make people think more deeply, and connect with those around them.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
New Zealand has to be my favourite holiday destination. I worked as a dancer on a cruise ship in my early 20’s and saw over 80 countries but NZ is where I met my amazing partner Tim (yes we have the same name)! So not only does it have some of the most beautiful sights but it also has my heart.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
When friends come to town I take them to the western suburbs of Melbourne – Yarraville Village is my favourite nook of Melbourne. I would take people to see a movie at the Sun Theatre then sit and have drinks on the main strip.
What are you currently reading?
It’s hard to make time to read when we are so busy in rehearsal mode – But when I do I always love to be deep in a fantasy novel escaping into another world. The painted man series is my all time favourite.
What are you currently listening to?
Well if my Spotify Wrapped is anything to go off, it’s all moody classical music or electronic songs. That’s what happens when you use your phone for rehearsal tracks! But I always come back to Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga – I actually have a huge Gaga tattoo on my back, she is my queen.
Happiness is?
Happiness to me is other people, sharing my life with the people I love and also my dog, he is my child and being on the couch with my partner and our dog makes me the happiest!
What does the future hold for you?
In the future, I would love see our company grow to the point of having our own facilities. A forever home for Scimm in the heart of Melbourne is the dream!
