On the Couch with Tarah Carey

Tarah Carey Arts Review On the CouchWho is Tarah Carey?
A sunny ‘middle’ sized, well caffeinated, mint-carrying person. Also, an actor, circus performer and co-founder of circus-theatre company Gravity Dolls.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
There was a time where I considered putting all my creative drives and hopes into a helium balloon and letting them go and becoming an environmental architect and designing sustainable buildings. Maybe in a parallel life, but in this one the only thing I’d change is backing myself a little earlier, start making my own work sooner.

Who inspires you and why?
I’m really inspired by artists and creators that create gritty, human, subversive work. I’m a little obsessed with It’s Not for Everyone by Acrobat at the moment.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I would put all the global warming deniers in the bin.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Amsterdam or the coast of Italy. I love it where you can walk everywhere and these two places were stands outs, such beautiful parts of the world.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I once took a friend on a Graffiti Tour with an iPhone App. It had directions and interesting info on the pieces. I’m still patting myself on the back for that one!

What are you currently reading?
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (and other concerns) by Mindy Kaling.

What are you currently listening to?
Usually something along the lines of Sia, The Shins or Lana Del Ray… but when I’m training (and I’m training lots in the prep for Tandem), I like to listen to gangster rap, the ‘Hype’ playlist on Spotify is my go to.

Happiness is?
Time to enjoy a sit down coffee. Melbourne coffee. Fresh sheets. Nailing a new skill. Seeing a great show.

What does the future hold for you?
Gravity Dolls is starting to gain some traction and there are some really exciting things in the pipeline, but of course, can’t talk about them yet!

Tarah can be seen in the Gravity Dolls’ production of Tandem, presented as part of the 2017 Poppy Seed Theatre Festival at Chapel Off Chapel from 28 November. For more information, visit: www.poppyseedfestival.com for details.
