On the Couch with Tara Morice

Tara Morice AAR On the CouchWho is Tara Morice?
I’ve been working as an actor in Australian theatre, film and tv for over 30 years. I was born in Hobart/ Nipaluna but went to seven different schools across the country growing up. I studied Australian History at ANU before graduating in Acting from NIDA.

I worked on the play of Strictly Ballroom in my first year out of NIDA and went on to play Fran in the movie, a role that has defined my career and one I am always proud of. I also loved doing the ABC teen show Dance Academy and meeting kids who embraced the show growing up.

I have been so lucky to work with so many amazing performers, directors, choreographers and creatives over the years.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I would try not to be so anxious about not being good enough, thin enough, pretty enough, young enough, awake enough… and trust my instinct more.

Who inspires you and why?
My great grandmother was a suffragette and a founding member of the Sisterhood For International Peace after WW1. My mother has been a school teacher all her life and still volunteers at 84. My daughter is a primary school teacher now. These women in my family all make a huge contribution to society.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I am very concerned about looking after the planet. I despair at the destruction. I do things I can on a small scale. I have planted trees and made a street garden in my neighbourhood. I recycle anything I can. I compost. I’ve been a vegetarian for 40 years.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I love anywhere cold and wild and empty. I adored travelling in Iceland. The scenery was so incredibly beautiful. I also loved the drive into Milford Sound in New Zealand… and Tasmania of course has the best wilderness.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
A swim at Shark Beach. A walk through Waverley Cemetery. A drink at the Opera Bar at sunset.

What are you currently reading?
I recently read Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart and Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan. Also Bleak House by Charles Dickens.

What are you currently listening to?
I always listen to ABC’s Triple J in the car – I love to keep up with new Australian music. Thelma Plum. Ball Park Music. Ruel. Hilltop Hoods. Also Iceland’s Ólafur Arnalds to stay calm.-

Happiness is?
Spending time with my daughter.

What does the future hold for you?
Working at the gorgeous State Theatre in September for Menopause The Musical® and the release of The Deb – a movie of the stage musical, in which I play Shell.
