On the Couch with Steven Fales

Confessions of a Mormon Boy Steven FalesWho is Steven Fales?
I’m an Oxy-Mormon. An Ethel Mormon. A Brokeback Mormon. A Latter Gay Saint. And I tell my stories about being human and a dad all over the world. Oh, and I’m single.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
I would be an impresario. I would produce the work of fellow creative friends and develop art that didn’t exist before.

Who inspires you and why?
Senator Bernie Sanders. I think he is one of the most important political transformational figures of our time. Not only does America need him … but the whole world is looking to him to win and turn things back around. I love his integrity and passion, and consistent, clear message. He’s the real deal.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I would eliminate extreme income inequality and bring about more financial equity so that we can start to focus even more on eradicating racism and bigotry and the greed and gluttony that masques it! And that greed would also turn climate change around!

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I would return for a romantic month along the Garden Route of South Africa and keep exploring all that the Cape Peninsula and Cape Town have to offer – especially the wine country!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take then to, and why?
Though professionally I am based in New York, I am now personally based in Palm Springs, California. I would take friends to epic Joshua Tree National Forest and then spend fabulous desert days and nights by the pools of Palm Springs. Get up early, because the sunrises in the desert are not to be missed! And I’ll be cooking for us…

What are you currently reading?
I’m reading all the memoirs I can. I love true stories. Any suggestions?

What are you currently listening to?
I am obsessed with Taylor Swift’s album, Lover. Her work gets better and better.

Happiness is?
Good health and enough cash flow to do what you love as a career and spend quality time with good friends and family.

What does the future hold for you?
There is so much on the other side of Mormon Boy! But for now, I’m on a mission to take the Mormon Boy message all over the world and bring it home to New York.

Steven will perform Confessions of a Mormon Boy at Chapel Off Chapel: 7 – 9 February as part of the 2020 Midsumma Festival. For more information, visit: www.chapeloffchapel.com.au for details.
