Who is Samuel Dundas?
Hmm. The million-dollar question, though, with inflation, is probably not actually worth that much. I’m one of those opera singer types who shout (with a great deal of technical aptitude) for a living, playing out some of the most iconic and dastardly roles in the operatic repertoire.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I’m currently studying and working in the student/young performer welfare space and have a passion for advocating well-being and positive performance practice, so the next generation can avoid or resist many of the pitfalls I’ve navigated over my career.
Who inspires you and why?
Great singers, who I grew up listening to, like Bryn Terfel, Simon Keenlyside, Thomas Allen and Rodney Gilfry (got to work with him during Opera Australia’s season of Brett Dean’s Hamlet). They are all pinnacle singers who have enjoyed successful and long careers and have all remained great ambassadors for the art form.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I hope whatever small contribution I have made to the arts landscape in this country helps to maintain the momentum of the arts as a relevant and important part of our cultural society. Then I hope I’m able to use my own personal experiences with mental health and the experience I’ve developed over my career to assist the next generation in navigating the tribulations of this career.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Bali, because my son belongs in the water every day!
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
With a five-year-old, we spend more time at the Melbourne Museum and Melbourne Zoo than nearly anyone I know. Hard to go past them.

Marcus Aurelius Meditations (for the mind), Raymond E. Feist (for distraction)

Happiness is?
Being grateful for everything you have and paying little to no attention to things you can’t control.
What does the future hold for you?
The future holds enjoying every second of playing Eugene Onegin at West Australian Opera (one of the only roles I’ve ever had on my bucket list), finishing my Masters of Counselling and spending as much time with my family as possible.
