On the Couch with Sally Marett

The Street Sally Marett AAR On the CouchWho is Sally Marett?
I’m a mum, wife, friend and creative who loves telling stories, whether that be through theatre, music, writing, design or architecture. Inherently, I’m someone interested in what connects us, what makes us feel seen, and what can better our world.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
At the moment I wouldn’t do anything differently. I feel very blessed to currently do a range of work that gives me very rich, varied experiences, and in my personal life I am deeply fulfilled with who I spend time with, where I live and what I am engaged with. That said, I think I’ve arrived at this place because I’ve embraced doing things differently, so I hope life has a whole lot more difference to offer me. No doubt it does!

Who inspires you and why?
I’m really inspired by people who have risen above adversity to live authentic lives; whether that be imposed on them or the personal adversity we all face. These people aren’t always recognised publicly. Sometimes, (well often), they’re the quiet achievers, wonderfully making a difference to the lives of others discreetly with service and compassion.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I think a big difference in the world would occur, if we all did small, daily acts of kindness for one another. I would love for the world to be shown the value of this in a more tangible way. I also believe that art makes a difference in the world, as it shows us our humanity, so I will continue to be involved in that, especially in supporting and developing the work of others.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Copenhagen, because it is the perfect mix of great architecture, great design, great people, great food, amazing history, beautiful vistas, and is fantastic to navigate walking or cycling. It inspires me so much, and I think a good holiday always does that!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I can’t go past Lake Burley Griffin. It’s surrounded by Canberra’s incredible mountains and is in the centre, so you can look across to iconic Canberra attractions such as Mount Ainslie, Black Mountain, the War Memorial, Parliament House, the NGA, the list goes on…

What are you currently reading?
The script for The Story of the Oars! I have had the great privilege of being a part of this project (dipping in and out) from the first script development, and I find that each time I read it gives me more and more. Nigel’s writing is exquisite! I’m also a big magazine fan (a little analogue in this digital age I know), and I’ve been delving into some cool new finds including Union Magazine and Good Sport.

What are you currently listening to?
I’m trying to expand what I listen to so I’m listening to random recommendations of artists I haven’t heard before. Often they’re not new artists but just haven’t come into my world yet. I put them in a big playlist with lots of old favourites. I’ve also been listening to the stunning score for The Story of the Oars by Jay Cameron, which is delighting me.

Happiness is?
Peace and freedom. And time with my husband and daughter.

What does the future hold for you?
I have absolutely no idea, but I’m hoping it’s quality time with family and friends, fulfilling work, service, time in nature and good health.
