On the Couch with Ryan Gonzalez

Ryan Gonzalez is a non-binary Spanish – Australian performer, known for their work in theatre. Currently appearing in Gutenberg! The Musical at Hayes Theatre Co.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
Well, performing is such a consuming job. It takes most of your energy and your time. So when I’m not performing, I love to spend my downtime travelling. If I could work my schedule a little differently, I would love to work for one month and then travel the next!

Who inspires you and why?
At the moment my biggest inspiration is Durand Bernarr. Their music, their presence and their artistry is so aligned with their sense of self and authenticity. And they are CHEEKY! They really trust themself in everything they create, and I am inspired by their approach to creativity and music as an art form.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I think theatre actually does change the world. Really honestly and truly. Theatre is designed to heal, and spark inspiration and shift perspectives. So what I would do to change the world, is encourage people to see shows.

See shows about things that make you feel seen, and also shows that challenge you and make you feel uncomfortable. And not just theatre shows. Live music, art galleries, burlesque, cabaret comedy. Put your guard (and your phone) down and allow yourself to be open.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Spain. It’s always going to be Spain. Sevilla specifically. Such a gorgeous city, incredible food and beautiful people. So much to love!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I would take them to three stops. Hayes Theatre Company, because they have the most incredible performances in such a tiny intimate space. Alberto’s Lounge, cause the food and wine list is off the charts! (The donuts are my fave) White Rabbit Gallery in Chippendale, because they have a super eclectic range of artists on display, always.

What are you currently reading?
Well, I am currently reading my Gutenberg script, over and over, just to make sure the lines are staying fresh in my brain. And also the world premiere script of Mackenzie, another play I’ll be doing in the middle of the year!

What are you currently listening to?
Robyn’s new album, Sexistential. Favourite tracks include; Dopamine, Talk to me and Into the Sun.

Happiness is?
Balance. Finding the joy and in struggle and vice versa. Understanding all ups have downs.

What does the future hold for you?
This year I was lucky to choreograph and assistant direct my first show. I loved the challenge, and I loved discovering how to create and put a show together. I think the future holds a lot more creating, and a lot more building of shows, and other projects too, but who knows what? Might be time for another solo show?
