On the Couch with Ross McCormack

Ross McCormack Arts Review On the CouchWho is Ross McCormack?
Ross McCormack is a Choreographer/Designer based in Auckland NZ. I have worked in various different companies in NZ and Australia before residing in Belgium for the last 10 years, where I worked with Les Ballets C de la B.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
I started out as a Builder prior to dance and have always enjoyed design and creating things with my hands.  Its possible I’d be doing something that combines the two were it not for dance.

Who inspires you and why?
Presently, Artist David Altmejd his sculpture and meticulous design monoliths are madness! Samuel Beckett’s writings and plays inspire me hugely with question around space, and Mathew Barney’s perspective here as well! Somehow I connect them.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Recycle as best as I can and limit my waste and refrain from eating canned tuna!

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Queen Charlotte Sound, New Zealand… A place I have gone to since I was a kid, you can only get to it by boat… so that says everything really.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
The waterfall in Piha, West Coast Auckland. It’s kinda amazing, and whatever troubles you have get sidelined – if only momentarily!

What are you currently reading?
The Dark Charisma of Adolf Hitler by Laurence Rees

What are you currently listening to?
Don McGlashan – The Front Lawn

Happiness is?
Little breakthroughs and kayaking.

What does the future hold for you?
Hopefully more inspiring artistic collaborations that push other perspectives. A new work with the NZDC (Matter) and more investment with my own company, Muscle Mouth.

Ross’s new work, If Form Was Shifted is currently being presented as part of a double-bill, If_ Was_ by Dancenorth at The Substation, Newport until 2 July 2016. For more information, visit: www.thesubstation.org.au for details.
