On the Couch with Rose Riley

Belvoir Rose Riley photo by Brett BoardmanWho is Rose Riley?
I am an actor, originally from WA, trying to live life committed to my art, my values, my family and friends, and always in pursuit of good food.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I would try to be riddled with less self doubt, I would read more, smash my phone with a hammer and invent a teleportation device so I could visit my beautiful family in WA whenever I wanted to and for free.

Who inspires you and why?
I am inspired by my peers in the artistic community, and the kindness and passion I see all around me every day. Right now I am hugely inspired by the amazing people I am working with at Belvoir St Theatre on Sam Holcroft’s play, A Mirror.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I hope to continue to have the privilege to be in the arts. Art keeps us connected to our humanity, our compassion and helps shape our understanding of this troubled but beautiful world.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
There are so many places I’m yet to visit but I did spend a month in Japan a year ago and can’t wait to go back. The food! The bars! The mountains! The people!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Currently I would take them to The Key’s Under the Mat, Mike Hewson’s exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW. That, and Wiley’s Baths on Coogee.

What are you currently reading?
Flesh by David Szalay.

What are you currently listening to?
ABC Classic every morning, then ML Buch, Jon Hopkins and always Joni Mitchell.

Happiness is?
Rehearsing a play.

What does the future hold for you?
Hopefully much more of the same.

Rose can be seen in Sam Holcroft’s hit new play, A Mirror – which will play the Belvoir St Theatre from  21 February – 22 March 2026. For more information, visit: www.belvoir.com.au for details.
