Who is Richard Mills?
A very busy occasional eater of pasta and drinker of red wine who loves his garden, his dog, his partner, his work and his colleagues. I’m also known for my work as a composer-conductor and am currently Artistic Director of Victorian Opera.
What would you do differently to what you do now?
I could have studied medicine, but music won out. I sometimes think about what I might have specialised in. I would have been a lousy surgeon as I can’t sew on a button properly but think I might have done something radical. I’ve long supported Médecins Sans Frontières.
Who inspires you and why?
Anyone who manifests talent, a generous spirit and a sense of humour.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I do try to make a difference through my work and the organisations I support. I try to help in local situations and local charities. Small perhaps, but something at least. I admire the many who do much more than me.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Anywhere in the Mediterranean because of the food, wine, history, spirituality, and languages. I also love returning to Queensland where I grew up, in particular Stradbroke Island.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
A Victorian Opera production! There’s huge variety in the company’s productions and the standard of performances are always exceptionally high. I’m very proud of our work.
What are you currently reading?
Pope Francis’ Dio è un poeta – God is a Poet.
What are you currently listening to?
Recordings of Spanish cellist, composer and conductor Pablo Casals.
Happiness is?
Peace of mind and peace of heart. The wonders of animals and nature. Laughter and the love of friends.
What does the future hold for you?
Taxation, death and, hopefully, heaven – if I’m allowed in!
