On the Couch with Rebecca Gulinello

Rebecca-Gulinello-AAR-On-the-CouchWho is Rebecca Gulinello?
Rebecca Gulinello is a rising Italian-Australia Opera Star, and is about to make her Opera Australia company and role debut, as Micaëla, in Carmen on Cockatoo Island.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I wouldn’t do anything differently other than to keep striving to be more present in my personal and professional life. I think this is the key to living an authentic life and having a fulfilling career.

Who inspires you and why?
Women who are mothers and juggle the fine balancing act of being entrepreneurs and keeping a home. I can’t help but also admire women like Jennifer Lopez. For me she represents a woman who isn’t afraid to bear her masculine and feminine energy to the world. She just keeps evolving and gaining more credential.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I make a difference to the world by showing up every day and being kind to others and offering my love and support to my friends and family. I strive to make a difference by being artistically honest and truthful on stage in any roles I play. I want the audience to walk away being moved in some way.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I just got back from Hawaii and now I can’t wait to go back! But I’d say anywhere hot and tropical… Maldives, Bali and Sardegna are some of the places on my to visit list!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I love taking friends to the different beautiful beaches of Sydney such as Bondi, and then also showing them my favourite bars and restaurants. Apollonia bar for underground hole-in-the wall vibes and Dean and Nancy’s for towering views of the city and a showcase of unique cocktail making from handsomely uniformed bartenders. it’s a whole experience!

What are you currently reading?
I’m not reading anything currently but when I do, I’m always reading self-help books, or anything about psychology/nutrition or autobiographies of famous sportsmen or celebrities.

What are you currently listening to?
Whatever opera I’m studying at the time… I like to listen to different interpretations of the music from different artists. But away from opera, on the weekends I love to chill out to pop and RnB music. New and old school is the best!

Happiness is?
Gelato. Sydney has a stunning Gelateria called Rivareno in Barangaroo… and it definitely gives me an indulgent moment of Italy reminiscence. I’m going back to visit family in August 2023. Italy is my happy place.

What does the future hold for you?
I will be also making my Sydney Opera House debut with Opera Australia in March as Mimì in La Bohème – so I’m particularly excited about that. I can’t wait to see what the future holds ahead of 2023!
