Who is Nicholas Lester?
I was born in Adelaide, grew up in Balaklava, was based in London for 20+ years where I built an international career and have now settled back in Adelaide with my wife and two children to be closer to my family.
Some would say that I am reassuringly tall, certainly some of those that listen to me shout at pitch for a living. Some would say that they enjoyed learning to ride a motorbike and passing their test – I worked as a motorcycle instructor in London in my spare time. Some would say that they enjoyed developing their singing with my help.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I enjoy working with people on their singing and performing and would happily keep doing this, but if it was something entirely different I’d enjoy being nerdy about languages.
Who inspires you and why?
My younger brother is inspiring. He’s had significant health issues since he was a young adult, including many major operations, and as he’s worked through that he’s pivoted career. He is now a qualified Vascular Physician and specialises in helping people going through the sorts of issues he has suffered from. You might even have seen him on the TV.
Musically and dramatically – any artist who creates art to a high standard that challenges and moves people. I’m up to the challenge of recreating music and delivering a performance that hopefully does some of this, but I don’t have the skill and scope to create new work.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Creating a role on stage and singing with no amplification or mixing is a visceral experience. Audiences can consume opera on the radio, the tv and online, but live in the theatre is unparalleled. I would find a way to make it possible for all children to experience a live operatic performance and help them embrace the joy, emotion and drama and switch off from their own lives and drama for a while.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
I had a contract in Norway and would love to go back. A gorgeous country, the people were generous and warm. A bucket list trip would be to ride a motorbike from the South to Nordkapp (I would need a good chunk of time a significant amount of cash to make it a reality).
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
It would be very hard to avoid trips to the Barossa Valley for a winery tour and many fantastic restaurants too!
What are you currently reading?
Remember You’re A Rider – Claire Jones (focusses on your mindset as a motorcycle rider/student). Also lined-up is: The Musician’s Mind – Lynn Helding (another brain type book but more scientifically focused. Australian Road Rules – my son is shortly going to learn to drive and I definitely need a refresh on Australia Vs UK rules (thankfully there is lots of overlap!!)
What are you currently listening to?
Into The Woods (on repeat). Carmen. And a very eclectic playlist full of utter randomness and it gets longer by the day!
Happiness is?
A good sleep, a quality meal and time in the sun with friends and family. Getting to turn up, play and create in the rehearsal room and theatre with some excellent people.
What does the future hold for you?
Lots more singing I hope – it brings me (and I hope) others joy!
Nicholas stars as the Mysterious Man in State Opera South Australia’s production of Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine – which will be presented at Adelaide’s Her Majesty’s Theatre from 22 – 29 August 2026. Nicholas also stars as Dancaire / Morales in Opera South Australia’s production of Bizet’s Carmen – which will be presented at Adelaide’s Her Majesty’s Theatre from 17 – 24 October 2026.
