On the Couch with Nathan Sawaya

Nathan Sawaya AAR On the CouchWho is Nathan Sawaya?
Nathan Sawaya is a former New York City corporate lawyer turned world-renowned award-winning contemporary LEGO® artist. His multiple global touring exhibitions, ART OF THE BRICK, have become an international phenomenon reinventing the way people see both LEGO® bricks and art.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I don’t look back. I am satisfied with where I am presently and how I got here. If you are asking what I would do if I wasn’t an artist, well then I would probably be a chef.

Who inspires you and why?
I have always been inspired by sculptor Antony Gormley for his human forms. I have been inspired by artist Tom Friedman for his amazing sculptures out of household items. I am inspired by emerging artist Blair Simmons for her unique works and endless creativity.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
With the Art Revolution Foundation, I worked to put more art supplies in schools. We are seeing less and less art curriculums currently in schools and I believe that is a mistake. In order to make a difference in this world, I want to inspire more creativity. More art. My mantra is that ART IS NOT OPTIONAL.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Bora Bora. I love sleeping in a hammock over crystal clear water.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
The Sphere in Las Vegas. Mind blowing.

What are you currently reading?
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin.

What are you currently listening to?
Probably 80’s music.

Happiness is?
Happiness is creating. I am happiest in my studio working on a new piece.

What does the future hold for you?
Well, with over 10 million LEGO bricks in my studio, I will probably stick with creating art out of LEGO for a little while.

Nathan will elevate your LEGO experience to another level with the Art of the Brick Immersive Experience – currently on display at the Melbourne Showgrounds. For more information, visit: www.theartofthebrickexpo.com for details.
