On the Couch with Nath Valvo

Nath Valvo Arts Review On the CouchWho is Nath Valvo?
Nath Valvo is a comedian because he is awful with a power tool. He is also very hungry right now because he despises food shopping and it’s in the middle of the Comedy Festival. Today, breakfast was a rice cracker with cheese and lunch was a rice cracker with cheese.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
Eat less cheese!

Who inspires you and why?
People that love what they do. Comedy, teaching, nursing, bus driver – get pumped about shit ya know? I have no idea how people stay at jobs they hate or hang out with people they don’t really like. This is now sounding like a Ted Talk. Apologies. I’m trying hard to sound deep as your publication has ‘arts’ in the title.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Is this question from a Miss Universe pageant? I love it! I really hope after this question you’re going to ask me to play an instrument wearing a sash. The biggest difference I would make is ban any article on the internet that tells me what gives me cancer. WE GET IT! Everything is bad for us. More cat pictures, please.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Anywhere beachside. Which is confusing because I have a very weird relationship with the ocean. I love seeing the ocean but I absolutely hate going to the beach. My skin burns, I swallow too much water and I freak out that everything is a shark. But it’s very pretty and looking at open water relaxes me but then I think about having to wear bathers in front of strangers and I cry. It’s all very exhausting.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take then to, and why?
I’m an awful host because I don’t like leaving the house in the daytime. I’m more of a “here is my wifi password. Look up some stuff to do today then let me know what bar you end up at tonight and I’ll come meet you there!” So in terms of bar – my favourite in Melbourne is Cabinet on Swanston Street. Get the cocktail that tastes like gingerbread biscuits. It’s like Christmas in your mouth.

What are you currently reading?
So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson. Very late to the party I know but so so good!

What are you currently listening to?
The TV is on in the next room. It’s the Ch10 news doing the live traffic report from a helicopter, which is the most pointless segment on Australian TV. If someone is watching the news they ARE HOME no need to tell them about the traffic situation.

Happiness is?
Having a fridge full of food.

What does the future hold for you?
A nap. An email check. A ticket sales check to see if anyone is coming to my show. I’ll read an article about cancer. Eat some cheese. Go do my show tonight. 😀

Following a critically-acclaimed season at the Melbourne International Comedy festival, Nath’s latest show, Tongue in Cheek is playing at the Sydney Comedy Festival: 28 April – 1 May 2016.
