On the Couch with Moreblessing Maturure

I’m an actor, writer, publication founder… a talented doer of many things. In the immediate timeline I’m playing Cleo in the touring production of seven methods of killing kylie jenner.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
Ooo, I’ve set my life up in a way that allows me to do multiple things I love. If it wasn’t this, I’d be capitalism’s handmaiden, girl bossing byway to fortune500 or something. That, or looking after the most enviable veggie garden and making jams

Who inspires you and why?
The many incredible artists, activists, thinkers and organisers that work and create and forge around me and on my TL.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Since it’s true, don’t think it’s conceited to say I already am

Favourite holiday destination and why?
At this point, I’d love to go on a trip back to Zimbabwe – my skin always glows when I’m there. I deserve that!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
An excursion to Burwood for some quality Ramen followed by the drive-in cinema in Penrith.

What are you currently reading?
Currently working through a reading list on abolition, which has been very invigorating – currently I’m reading Are Prisons Obsolete? by Angela Y. Davis. When I’m in the mood for fiction, I drop into The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett about two Black light skinned twins who run away from home and split off when one who decides to pass and live as white, while the other marries a dark skinned man

What are you currently listening to?
I love a good audio drama, the most recent one I finished was Sandra by Gimlet – a sci-fi thriller set in a world where AI assistants are actually humans in a room somewhere, telling you the capital of Turkey. With music, I love creating playlists for any and very occasion – my latest creation takes you from 60s Bossa Nova to Barkaa.

Happiness is?
Sleeping in, good music, watering my houseplants and painting.

What does the future hold for you?
This year I’m touring the Darlinghurst/Green Door Theatre production of seven methods of killing kylie jenner across Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. Somewhere between those I’ll make a 3rd attempt premiere an original work at Campbelltown Arts Centre (fingers crossed the PanDemi-Levato stays at bay) and I’ll be working on No Pink Dicks – my play that was commissioned and funded by Darlinghurst Theatre Company and Australia Council.

Moreblessing stars as Cleo in seven methods of killing kylie jenner – currently playing at Darlinghurst Theatre Company (Eternity Playhouse) until 20 February, before playing at La Boite’s Roundhouse Theatre (Brisbane) from 24 February – 12 March 2022.
