On the Couch with Mojo Juju

Parrtjima Festival Mojo JujuWho is Mojo Juju?
Mojo Juju is Mojo Ruiz de Luzuriaga and to be honest, it really is my brother Steve as well. He has been my longest running collaborator and most consistent band member of the years. We work really closely together!

What would you do differently to what you do now?
I don’t think I’d do much differently… but maybe, if anything, I would’ve done it sooner. Oh and everything better! I’m always pushing myself to do better. haha!

Who inspires you and why?
My family, my elders, my ancestors. I think I’ve learnt, over the process of making my most recent album, just how strong and brave and resilient they are/were. It’s inspired me to own the spaces I occupy and to do more with the platforms that I have.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I mean I’m trying daily. I commit to awkward conversations. Confront hatred and bigotry. Meet anger with empathy. Use my voice to the benefit of people who do not have a voice. I think these are important ways to make change in your immediate world.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Beside the sea side. The water is calming and awe inspiring.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
In Melbourne? I think it’s about going out to see live music and arts. That’s the heart of this city.

What are you currently reading?
I have actually just been given a copy of I am Uluru by Jen Cowley and The Uluru Family.

What are you currently listening to?
Always searching for new music. Lately I’ve been listening a lot to H.E.R. – a Filipina sister! And also Emily Wurramurra and Alice Skye.

Happiness is?
Balance. I think you need to have balance between work, fun, creativity, family, health, decadence… all of it. It’s about experiencing things. I dunno, maybe I’m not the one to ask, but I strive towards balance. I haven’t mastered it yet.

What does the future hold for you?
MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC! (hence my issues with balance hahaha!)
