On the Couch with Mikaela Corrigan

Mikaela Corrigan AAR On the CouchWho is Mikaela Corrigan?
This question makes me so nervous. I am so many people, places and things combined into one 5’7 being. I am the manifestation of every woman in my family, I am the strength and kindness of every friend I have, I am the softness of the love my partner gives, and I am the knowledge passed onto me by everyone I have crossed paths with.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I think I would be a teacher. I love art history so I think I would have liked to have a classroom with so many fantastic paintings around the place with music playing whilst students scribble drawings in their sketch books… But I don’t think anything could ever keep me away from the stage. It was my first love!

Who inspires you and why?
Winston Cooper. Winston taught me during my studies at acting school and before every show I perform in or direct I pretend Winston is there saying, “Just act better. You know what I mean?” He and his beautiful wife Meg are both very special to me. They both care so deeply about the arts industry and are truly a guiding light for young creatives.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Hold the patriarchy accountable for the systemic violence against women. In this current time of this interview, 41 women have been murdered due to gendered violence in New South Wales, unfortunately, probably more. Nicholas [Pavan] and I have devoted ourselves to creating a production company [Cats in the Cupboard Productions] that is a safe space for women. The shows we produce and the shows I write give a voice to those who have been told they should be voiceless. I will never stop trying to create safe spaces for women where they feel empowered and heard.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
This year has been a long one in terms of our theatre work. I think I’d really just like to be in my house, sitting in the sun with a good book for a few days.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I would take them to my cat’s cat tower so they can stare at those little cuties, Ellie, Peggy and Rosemary. Then we’d go for a walk along Blackwattle Bay. It’s beautiful there.

What are you currently reading?
I love this question! I haven’t been able to do much reading outside of research based readings this year so I’m currently reading Elektra by Jennifer Saint and it’s such a great book, it doesn’t feel like research at all! Highly recommend.

What are you currently listening to?
Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan.

Happiness is?
Listening to audience members after they have just seen a Cats in the Cupboard Productions show. Our production of Secret Girl Stuff influenced a young woman to leave her long term relationship which she was experiencing domestic violence. She is one of the bravest people I think I have ever met. We still keep in touch.

What does the future hold for you?
