On the Couch with Michael Cormick

Michael-Cormick-AAR-On-the-CouchWho is Michael Cormick?
I am a Singer/Actor who has been fortunate enough to travel the world doing what I love for the past 45 years.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I started in the business when I was 15, so I don’t really know anything else. If I was to have my time over again, I don’t think I would choose differently. I often fantasise about being a Designer or a Director, or something in the Visual Arts.

Who inspires you and why?
This may sound cliche, but it’s my Mother. She is one of those people who always somehow manages to see the positive in everything. Regardless of  what life throws at her. That is a state of mind and heart that I find really Inspiring.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Hmmmmmm. That’s a big one. I feel the most effective thing I can do is lead by example. It’s the small things that can make a difference. If I could blink and make a change, it would be that everybody on this planet would know their worth, know themselves and the joy and love that lives inside of all of us.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
My friends have a house on Nusa Lembongan. It is mind-blowingly beautiful. A great place to relax and let your imagination run wild.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I always take people to the Botanical Gardens, The Art Gallery, and of course the Theatre. There is always some fabulous musical on. La Cage Aux Folles for example!

What are you currently reading?
To be honest, I’m not much of a reader. Should I admit that? I prefer audio books. Mind you, I am reading the script of La Cage Aux Folles in preparation for our upcoming season in Melbourne.

What are you currently listening to?
My music tastes vary, so depending on my mood and time of day it can be anything from Classical to Isaac Hayes so I can get my Groove on. I’m also listening to my friend Tina Arena’s new Album, Love Saves.

Happiness is?
A night with friends/ family, good food, good wine and lots of laughter.

What does the future hold for you?
I have a fresh canvas on which to paint.

Michael stars as Georges in La Cage Aux Folles at Arts Centre Melbourne from 9 November 2023. For more information, visit: www.lacage.com.au for details.
