On the Couch with Melissa Kahraman

Melissa Kahraman AAR On the CouchWho is Melissa Kahraman?
Melissa is a daughter, sister, aunt, friend, actor, artist, lover of cheese, lover of gin, avid reader, hypocrite, celiac, someone with a great laugh and even greater head of hair.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
Probably just start looking after my health a little earlier. I don’t have too many regrets, all of that experience has gotten me to where I am today.

Who inspires you and why?
My parents – they’re my harshest critics and best friends. They always go above and beyond to support me and my siblings in everything we choose to do even if it’s not financially secure (acting lol). The love they have for each other and our family is pretty special.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Right now, Ceasefire in Gaza.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
In my second year of drama school my two friends Nick, Elyse and I hired a car and drove around the South Island of New Zealand for 10 days. It was in the height of winter, we nearly froze to death but every town we arrived in, sincerely left me awe inspired. Star gazing at Aoroki (mount cook) was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
We’re spending the day at the beach – probably Gordons Bay or Camp Cove to watch the sunset. Or going for a hike in the Blue Mountains.

What are you currently reading?
I’m doing this insane thing where I’m reading fiction and a collection of essays at the same time. My brain will explode any day now, I’m sure of it. I was gifted a copy of Audre Lorde’s The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House. It’s a collection of essays on the power of women. It’s brilliant, deeply inspiring and I think should be required reading for everyone. I also just finished book two of the Empyrean series: it has everything you need – dragons, magic, enemies to lovers, spice. Honestly no notes.

What are you currently listening to?
I cycle between Chappell Roans new album and the Merrily We Roll Along (revival cast album). Perfection!

Happiness is?
Hearing my niece and nephew laughing.

What does the future hold for you?
Short term – will get out of bed and grab a coffee, maybe brush my hair. Long term – will be working on a fabulous production at Belvoir 25a called Hot Tub by Lewis Treston to cap off 2024.

Melissa stars as Cordelia/Fool in Bell Shakespeare’s production of King Lear – which is currently playing in the Fairfax Studio – Arts Centre Melbourne until 11 August 2024. For more information, visit: www.bellshakespeare.com.au for details.
