On the Couch with Matt Bonner

Matt-Bonner-AAR-On-the-CouchWho is Matt Bonner?
Matt Bonner, 45 is a practicing multimedia projection artist based in Geelong, Australia. He combines his passion and skills in filmmaking, photography, animation, and music to create projection art in public spaces. Matt loves the challenging aspect of Projection Art due to the level of technical requirements of creating a piece of work to fit the architectural features and transforming a building into something else that creates an illusion and a visual delight for the audience. His attention to detail and ability to transform a façade by highlighting every feature is a source of great pride and satisfaction.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I have always been a creative person and I love all facets of the creative industry. If I wasn’t creating projection art, I would still be working on other passions such as filmmaking, animation and music. I also have a keen interest in Australia’s History and historical buildings.

Who inspires you and why?
My family and friends have all been great support around me throughout my career and inspire me to keep following my passions even when things have been difficult at times in my life.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Eradicate greed, corruption, and hatred and end poverty. All of these significantly impact our Children’s future and generations to come.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Each year we travel as a family to Mount Beauty in winter. I spend some much-needed time relaxing and enjoying the country life there and going to Falls Creeks for some action and fun snowboarding.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I love bushwalking and photography and would take them to places where we can enjoy being outdoors such as the beaches along the Surf Coast or to waterfalls in the Otways.

What are you currently reading?
I am not currently reading any particular book, but I really have a keen interest in Australian history and historical buildings that could possibly become a canvas for my work in the future. I love to meet people and find interesting stories that may inspire what I create for my projection art and filmmaking projects.

What are you currently listening to?
I listen to a range of different types of music from rock, grunge, electronic, and indie folk. Currently, I have been listening to Agnes Obel – a Danish singer, songwriter, and musician based in Berlin. I really enjoy the emotion and haunting sound of her music.

Happiness is?
Spending time with my family and friends, having fun and being creative.

What does the future hold for you?
I would like to see my career evolve and find opportunities to take my projection work around Australia and one day internationally. I also hope to produce and direct Australian films that tell many of the untold stories of our past.
