On the Couch with Martin Crewes

Martin-Crewes-AAR-On-the-CouchWho is Martin Crewes?
I’m a British born, Australian actor, singer, writer, teacher and doer of whatever else I need to do to keep the mortgage paid and the good times rolling.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
What I do now is already so diverse it’s hard to think of anything to add into the mix. I’d maybe do it better. If I had my time over, I’d be far less ready to take “no” for an answer.

Who inspires you and why?
I spend my time in a constant state of awe at the level of talent and accomplishment that is on display all around us these days, from seasoned masters of their crafts to emerging young artists in so many new and different areas that have been provided by the advent of social media. Anyone who finds the courage and the means to express their own particular view of the world to a broader audience has my complete admiration.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
If there was a way to get everyone in the world, not even everyone, one per cent of everyone, to adopt a daily meditation practice, I think the world would be a vastly different place.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I live in Bondi, and I sail a lot on Sydney Harbour, so my life is already pretty much a holiday! Having said that I’ve had great family holidays in Bali and Thailand, and we are planning to sail around some of the Greek Islands in the next year or so, which I’m really looking forward to. For my little family there aren’t many better places than Hamilton Island.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I always make a point of taking friends out on the harbour. It’s one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world that not only has incredible views of the city, the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge but so much untouched coastline with little bays and beaches everywhere. It really is the jewel of the city as far as I’m concerned.

What are you currently reading?
Rat Pack Confidential by Shawn Levy. I perform in a Rat Pack tribute show called Rat Pack Reloaded and I’m fascinated by that time in American history when Frank, Dean and Sammy were the absolute hard drinking, hard working, super talented kings of cool.

What are you currently listening to?
I’ve just been revisiting John Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen. It’s such a classic R&B album.

Happiness is?
Any time spent with my wife and son. I’m a very lucky guy!

What does the future hold for you?
I’ve just had a film come out called Everything in Between, (possibly still playing at a cinema near you so go see it and take all your friends!) so hopefully more of that. I have a couple of projects lined up for 2023, which I can’t talk about yet but I’m excited, and I’m writing the biography of a friend of mine who has a really fascinating story to tell.
