Who is Maria Zajkowski?
I’m a poet, lyricist and librettist. Originally from Aotearoa, I live in Naarm with my partner and our matching cat and dog.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
Where to begin? Everything and nothing. I would be more courageous and acknowledge myself more. I would also do more swimming. Being under water reminds me that I am breathing for a reason. It’s an easy escape from everyday gravity, it’s hard, and it’s fun.
Who inspires you and why?
Tina Turner for her Buddhist chanting. Who she was, the obstacles she overcame in her life, and how this manifested when she chanted. I don’t know why but it really resonates with me.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Make more space in life to foster kindness. And find a cure for plastic!
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Anywhere that’s not my home. I don’t take enough holidays.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Altona dog beach, if they like dogs, because it’s a circus down there. Otherwise, we’d go out for Vietnamese food in Footscray because its excellent. I consider food an attraction.
What are you currently reading?
Bare-Faced Messiah: The True Story of L Ron Hubbard by Russell Miller. And Altazor by Vicente Huidobro.
What are you currently listening to?
A podcast called A Little Bit Culty. It gets me through my gym rehab at 6am in the morning.
Happiness is?
Peace. For everyone. Also my dog snoring in the next room, which is not necessarily that peaceful but very comforting.
What does the future hold for you?
A second honeymoon. My third libretto. And hopefully more sleep!
Maria is the Librettist of Moonlite – which will make its Australian premiere at the Fitzroy Town Hall on Saturday 26 July 2025. For more information, visit: www.homophonic.com.au for details.
