On the Couch with Marcus Corowa

Marcus Corowa AAR On the CouchWho is Marcus Corowa?
I am a freelance artist, singer, songwriter, musician, actor living on Gadigal Country.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
Mmm… I’m not sure about this one. I’m currently doing something different to what I would normally do. Stepping into a leading role in a brand-new opera with Opera Australia is unlike my usual gigs and has stretched my skillset as a singer in really exciting ways. That’s why I love what I do, and why it’s hard to imagine doing anything else, it’s always different! I really enjoy that I’m continually growing and discovering new parts of myself and my artistry in the process.

Who inspires you and why?
Faith Bandler inspires me. Her unwavering commitment and dedication to drive a campaign for equality is extraordinary.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Recently I just ran the Gold Coast Marathon and raised funds for Kwansiwi School on Tanna Island, Vanuatu, to help them build more classrooms. They currently give lessons in a giant tent, which is too hot in summer and too cold and muddy when it rains during cyclone season. I would like to continue to make a difference by supporting grass root community-led initiatives.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
A couple of years ago I had a very busy year and so my wife and I booked a trip to Tasmania to switch off and relax. The nature, fresh seafood, quiet pace and wineries made it the perfect getaway.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
The ferry from Circular Quay to Manly is always a classic, but I’d probably just take them to eat fish and chips on the grassy hills at Coogee at sunset. Or snorkelling at Clovelly to see the blue gropers. I’ve got a lot of favourite swimming and snorkelling spots, so visits in summer are preferred! There’s so many attractions in Sydney but you can’t beat the natural beauty of this city, so I’d prefer to show that off. I’d also force feed them a sandwich from South Dowling Sandwiches, those caramelised carrots are SO good!

What are you currently reading?
At the moment I’m reading Blackbirding by Ryan Butta. It’s a heavy but necessary read that details the history of blackbirding in this country.

What are you currently listening to?
When I’m cooking dinner or KonMari folding my clothes, my go-to playlist is Kitchen Swagger on Spotify.

Happiness is?
To me happiness is in the simple things. A strong coffee in the morning, feeling sunshine on your skin, quality time with loved ones and time spent in nature.

What does the future hold for you?
I’m not much of a planner, I’m known as someone who really goes with the flow. But I hope to continue to tell the types of stories that challenges hearts and minds.
