On the Couch with Luke Kennedy

Luke Kennedy photo by Dylan EvansWho is Luke Kennedy?
I am a singer and producer at The Little Red Company. I am a part-time whiskey appreciator and a full-time fanatic of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
Nothing really – I truly enjoy work and the time I spend with my family and friends. I love that I have a job where I can be a creative, a performer and a producer on a huge variety of projects. But, if I were 6”8, I would have loved to be a professional basketballer.

Who inspires you and why?
I think it takes a huge amount of effort to become ‘Number 1’ – but it takes infinitely more effort to stay in that top spot. So, I am inspired by people who work hard to get to the top of their industry and then work harder to stay there.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I recently asked a similar question of my 13-year-old daughter and she had a much better answer than I could ever come up with. The question was “What would you do to make everyone in the world smile?” and she said “Give everyone a warm meal” – sorry Liv, I’m stealing your answer.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
FINLAND! We were there this January to see the Northern Lights. It was like driving onto a winter wonderland movie set. Everything was covered in pristine snow and miraculously quiet. We sat by the fire and got an amazing Northern Lights show, relaxed in the sauna, had great wine and food, oh, and we went husky sledding. I would go back in a heartbeat.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I live in Brisbane, so when friends come to town we generally head down to South Bank to relax and enjoy great food and entertainment down by the river. There are so many great restaurants at South Bank and always some amazing shows on at QPAC or live entertainment in the precinct as well as the galleries and museums. There’s lots to see and do.

What are you currently reading?
The Creative Act by Rick Rubin.

What are you currently listening to?
Djesse Vol. 4 by Jacob Collier. If you haven’t listened – it will blow your mind.

Happiness is?
A warm, lazy Sunday afternoon in the pool with nowhere else to be.

What does the future hold for you?
Swing On This 10th Anniversary performances at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. I absolutely can’t wait. Getting on stage with those cheeky chaffinches is always a blast. I’m honestly grinning just thinking about it.

Luke can be seen in the Swing On This 10th Anniversary concert – which will be presented at the Adelaide Festival Centre on 14 & 15 June, as part of the 2024 Adelaide Cabaret Festival. For more information, visit: www.adelaidecabaretfestival.com.au for details.
