Who is Luke Gabbedy?
I’m a baritone and I’ve been a Principal Artist with Opera Australia since 2006. I grew up in Perth and moved to Sydney in 2003.
What would you do differently to what you do now?
After finishing my music degree, I was a realist knowing it’s pretty rare to be able to sing full time, so I did a Graduate Diploma of Education so I could get by. So I guess I’d probably be a teacher.
Who inspires you and why?
My parents. They showed me how important it is to be happy and fulfilled. And if you’re not, having the courage to change.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I’d love to be a politician and try and make a difference that way, but I doubt I’d have the patience!
Favourite holiday destination and why?
I’ve just returned from a holiday with my gorgeous fiancé in the US. It was amazing and we can’t wait to go back asap.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I’d take them to the opera at the Sydney Opera House naturally!
What are you currently reading?
I’m always reading music scores. I’m constantly learning and memorising music and lyrics. I also love reading newspapers as well as the Betoota Advocate on Facebook for a laugh.
What are you currently listening to?
No opera that’s for sure! I listen to that all day at work! So like to relax with 80’s and 90’s rock and pop in the car. I also enjoy listening to electronic music. It’s a great way to escape from the pressure of performing.
Happiness is?
Just hanging out at home with my gorgeous fiancé and son.
What does the future hold for you?
Hopefully still doing what I’m doing now. I’m so lucky to be able to have a job that I love. And some more Verdi and Wagner!
Luke stars with Natalie Aroyan, Sian Pendry and Virgilio Marino in Opera Australia’s Mazda Opera in the Bowl at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Saturday 24 November 2018. For more information, visit: www.opera.org.au for details.
