On the Couch with Leanne Kenneally

Leanne-Kenneally-AAR-On-the-CouchWho is Leanne Kenneally?
I live in Brisbane with my husband and children, balancing artistic pursuits and family life. I cherish each moment and try to find joy and fulfillment in everything I do, right now that’s singing Despina in Cosi fan tutte with Opera Queensland.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I wouldn’t do anything different.

Who inspires you and why?
People who don’t give up no matter what, those who keep running the race. More specifically my husband Leon who is an unwavering support to me, encouraging me to do and be better in all things, with incredible patience.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I’d aim to use my platform as an opera singer to raise awareness and support charitable organisations dedicated to arts education and empowering women. I’m open to how and what that may look like.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
It would have to be the beach. Whether camping, on a boat or staying in a glamorous resort, nothing compares to the salty air, breath-taking views, the soothing and sometimes frightening sounds of the waves and the sensation of the sand beneath your feet.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Brisbane has plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature and outdoor activities even for a day. My favourite two are snorkelling at the wrecks on Moreton Island and hiking in Lamington National Park. In the unlikely event of having bad weather GOMA and the surrounding cultural precinct is wonderful.

What are you currently reading?
I’m still in awe after just finishing The Happiest Man on Earth by Eddie Jaku. How people survive tragedy and injustice inspires me. My grandfather suffered in a German prisoner of war camp for two years in WW1. I’ve lived and worked in Germany a bit and have loved the country, people and culture. My daughter was born there. I can’t comprehend it!

What are you currently listening to?
I’m enjoying many interpretations of Cosi fan tutte at the moment, but usually I listen to podcasts and the playlists of my children who tend to take over as DJ at home and in the car.

Happiness is?
Loving others and aspiring to make a positive impact in their lives.

What does the future hold for you?
Well, I’d hope to continue to evolve as an opera singer and teacher exploring more diverse roles, delightfully watch my family grow and give back to the community through my art.
