On the Couch with Lara Lightfoot

Lara Lightfoot AAR On the CouchWho is Lara Lightfoot?
Well, I thought about this for a long time before trying to google the answer (it didn’t help). I’m a massive procrastinator, I dislike fluorescent lights, and I wish I had some kind of ability with musical instruments. I talk a lot, and think even more, and when I’m not outrageously busy I get stressed. I’m a human with (hopefully) as many strengths as flaws, and I’m happiest when I’m laughing so hard I need an asthma inhaler.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
I’ve considered this a lot, and really, it’s nothing. Perhaps in a parallel universe I could be an astrophysicist, but in this reality I’m pretty content with life, and when I’m not I make a change. Look that’s not to say that on a weekly basis there aren’t moments I think “well I could have handled/responded to that differently” – but I think that’s just part of growing as a person.

Who inspires you and why?
People who come through adverse circumstances, committed to make a difference to other people. Anyone who stands up for those who don’t have a voice, or whose voice is not loud enough without support. People who want to make the world a better place, not just for them, but for others. Someone who embodies all of that at the moment is Emma González.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
When I was a kid I wanted to run the UN – I think that ship has sailed – so I suppose the difference I make in the world now is much closer to home. I try and be a supportive, kind, empowering, and silly human as much as possible, which makes a difference in my community, and hopefully those of others who cross my path.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Honestly, I don’t take a lot of holidays. Camped at Mystery Bay over the April long weekend, and spending time without phone connection, and with friends and my dog was the most relaxing break I’ve had in years.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
The MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art Australia): they’ve always got interesting exhibitions on and walking along the harbour you get a great view of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

What are you currently reading?
I have a stack of half read books on my bed-head at the moment, depending on what my mood requires: Bossypants – Tina Fey; A Forger’s Tale:Confessions of the Bolton Forger – Shaun Greenhalgh; and On The Move: A Life – Oliver Sacks. Hmm… looks like I’m really into autobiographies at the moment!

What are you currently listening to?
Fleetwood Mac. Always.

Happiness is?
Generated from the inside.

What does the future hold for you?
I don’t know, and I’m actually OK with that.
