Who is Lachlan Binns?
A young circus artist and founding member of Gravity & Other Myths (GOM). I grew up in Adelaide and began training circus at Cirkidz from a young age. I went on to start creating shows with 6 of my closest friends and colleagues through GOM. I am currently teaching, creating work and touring shows full time around the world.
What would you do differently to what you do now?
The only thing I would want to change is to cut out most of the time where we have no work. Fill our down time with more creative development or more performance opportunities. Although some time off is needed I’m at a stage of my life and career where I’m not interested in slowing down.
Who inspires you and why?
I am inspired by all the independent circus makers in Australia. There are so many innovative and exciting companies pushing the quality of Australian circus higher and higher. It is an inspiration to be apart of such a vibrant community. Obviously also my mum!
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I will continue to put on shows around the world to bring joy where I can. I believe that one of the best ways to bring about positive change is to have good conversations about things you are passionate about with the people close to you, people who trust you and are willing to listen.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
A few years ago two friends and I hired a car and drove down the Croatian coast. Although it’s becoming busier and busier in the summer months, I still love the combination of adventure, history and nightlife. I would say that anywhere in the Baltic region is my destination of choice.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I’m from Adelaide, and when I hear anyone is coming to my town I always recommend them to come in mad March. The city is alive with festivals of all kinds; Arts, Music Sports. The atmosphere is second to none in this time of year.
What are you currently reading?
I am currently in between books but the last book I read was Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. I’m a huge fan of fantasy and science fiction, and Pratchett would be one of my favourite authors. I love a bit of escapism when I read.
What are you currently listening to?
My playlist is full of up tempo music. Good mix of dance music and indie rock. Favourite bands at the moment would be James Blake, Northeast Party House and Rufus. Love having a boogie.
Happiness is?
A good meal and a cold beer after a hard day’s training surrounded by my friends.
What does the future hold for you?
Creating more shows, new work and growing the company bigger and stronger. My passion and energy is all going into this group of artists and the company we have created.
