On the Couch with Kevin Spink

Kevin Spink AAR On the CouchWho is Kevin Spink?
I am a Queensland-based storyteller currently in La Boite Theatre’s production of Closer. I’ve worked with an Oscar winner and recently wrote and directed films. I never went to university, instead learnt from working in rehearsal rooms and by mistakes on the stage.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
If I really wanted security and financial gain, I wouldn’t have become a theatre artist, but that would require having different DNA. In truth, I wouldn’t do anything differently. Choices make us who we are and I’m grateful for the cards I’m dealt.

Who inspires you and why?
I’m definitely inspired by stories of resilience. I recently worked with refugee children and now they’re finding their way safely in Australia. I look close for inspiration. Companies that make great stories and employ Queensland artists – that’s inspiring.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I’d protect young people from disadvantaged homes. Youth crime is on the rise. It needs investment, resources, and programs to elevate. They’re our future!

Favourite holiday destination and why?
My Grandads house (Montrose) on the east coast of Scotland. The air is unlike anywhere. The haar (a foggy sea mist) mixed with the smell of chimney smoke strikes a deep chord and within a ten-minute radius you’re bound to find a castle with a story.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I take folk to historical places. They don’t seem to visit twice, hmm! My favourite place is Spring Hill baths (oldest pool in the southern hemisphere). Then I head to The Old Windmill: the start of a dark time in our colonial beginnings. If they want to see a place, they should see it properly. At night, I’d go to Hellhound Bar on Brunswick Street for a pint and head down to a gig at The Zoo.

What are you currently reading?
I haven’t been able to read much literature outside the demands of the show. I recently finished a book called Killing for Country by David Marr. Our Australian history; It’s confronting, as the truth should be.

What are you currently listening to?
I’ve been nostalgic with 90’s gems. Loads of cheesy tunes like Craig David – which sounds horrendous but other stuff like The Verve and The Stone Roses. I can’t stop listening to the band, Sleep Token – Take Me Back to Eden is a proper vibe on the walk home.

Happiness is?
Being above ground is always good. But on a simple level; watering the garden, listening to a boxing podcast with a pack of salt and vinegar chips.

What does the future hold for you?
Oh sheesh, I’m going on a holiday to Scotland with my partner: the future is bright – kind of – because Scotland certainly won’t be! After that, I’ll get a cat, grow some vegetables and live a simple life – and then continue to tell stories!

Kevin will perform in Patrick Marber’s cult classic, Closer, at La Boite Theatre from 4 – 20 April 2024. For more information, visit: www.laboite.com.au for details.
