Who is Kate Hudson-James?
Hi! I’m a musical theatre performer based in Queensland, recently graduated from the Griffith Conservatorium. I’m from Toowoomba originally, but now live in Brisbane. I love reading, scrolling Pinterest, hanging out with my partner and dog, hoarding ticket stubs and scraps of cool paper, travelling, and helping my friends make art!
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I love what I am doing now, but if I wasn’t performing I think I’d be a full-time backpacker. I love travelling and there is so much world I want to see!
Who inspires you and why?
My parents. They’re two of the kindest, most supportive people I know. They introduced me to theatre when I was little, and have supported me in pursuing it, even for the first ten years or so when I wasn’t very good at it! I love them so much.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Go back in time and stop ChatGPT from ever being created. Controversial!
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Honestly, my bed. My kind of travel is rewarding but exhausting, so if I really want a holiday, a quiet weekend at home is the most recharging place for me.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Enoggera Reservoir for a swim and some turtle-spotting! It is such a beautiful part of Brisbane. For Toowoomba, I’d take them to the Empire Theatre to see a show – I will never tire of seeing my mates’ jaws drop when they see that proscenium arch for the first time.
What are you currently reading?
Five Seasons in Seoul by Christine Newell! It is an autobiographical recount of the year-long performing contract Christine spent in Korea, and it has already been so relatable and inspiring to me as a performer who would love to work internationally. I would highly recommend it!
What are you currently listening to?
I am an audiobook girlie and I’ve just started listening to the Fourth Wing series by Rebecca Yarros. I’m only in the first few chapters so haven’t formed an opinion on it quite yet!
Happiness is?
The freedom to pursue curiosity!
What does the future hold for you?
Rehearsals then shows of & Juliet at the Empire Theatre in Toowoomba from 13 – 22 March 2026! Later in the year I will be performing in the second staging of Grace Spinks’ original musical, The Middle Room in Brisbane. In between all that, lots of books, lots of Pinterest boards, and hopefully lots of auditions!
Kate stars as Juliet in & Juliet – which will be presented at Toowoomba’s Empire Theatre from 13 – 22 March 2026. For more information, visit: www.empiretheatre.com.au for details.
