On the Couch with Julian Louis

NORPA Julian Louis photo by Elise DerwinWho is Julian Louis?
Artistic Director, theatre maker, father, husband, son, friend.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
Create some space to stop and slow down a bit.

Who inspires you and why?
In theatre, I am inspired by companies like Complicite, by companies that bring a group of people together and there’s a sense of ensemble and a sense of working together on a common goal. I am inspired by working collaboratively and organically rather than being super organized and knowing everything. I like to discover things in the process.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Create accessible, vital, brave theatre within a community.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Japan, because everyone seems to have gone there except me!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
The Eltham Hotel because I like to show them where we created an amazing show called Love for One Night.

What are you currently reading?
I’m currently reading my mum’s (Yvonne Louis) latest book which is about a Dutch forger Han van Meegeren.

What are you currently listening to?
I’ve been listening to an interview Nick Cave did with Louis Theroux about the darker sides of storytelling which has been really inspiring for the latest NORPA work I am directing called Wildskin.

Happiness is?
My mind just went to kayaking, gardening, running.

What does the future hold for you?
Running and lots of mowing! Summer is just around the corner.
