On the Couch with Joshua Searle

Joshua Searle photo by Jack FarrarWho is Joshua Searle?
An Australian/Colombian artist who is primarily a painter and sculptor. He explores the diasporic position in contemporary societies founded upon migration and displacement in the Americas and Australia.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I couldn’t think of much to be honest. But if I didn’t have to make money, I would spend my time trekking around the world and eating with friends.

Who inspires you and why?
I won’t name anyone specific, but in general I’m inspired people who had an idea and went for it. I love seeing people who are full of passion for what they do, I think that inspires me to continue to do what I do.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I guess art is what I do to try and make a difference in the world. Sometimes it is big installations and political messaging, but sometimes that difference is just making someone’s world a little bit better for a moment when the are enjoying a painting I’ve made.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Colombia, it’s where my mother was born and where much of my family lives. When I visit it feels like I am going home. There is also an electricity in the air that I can’t explain, all you need to do is tap in and hold on. I can’t say I’ve ever experienced anything like it before.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
My partner and I are fortunate enough to live by the coast so we always take our guests to the beach. If the tides are right we will climb along the rocks to our favourite spots. Most of our friend are coming down from the city so it’s nice to give them something different.

What are you currently reading?
I am currently reading One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

What are you currently listening to?
Three triple R, can’t beat public radio.

Happiness is?
If you find out, let me know.

What does the future hold for you?
I’m pretty excited to have my first solo exhibition held in a major public gallery, opening later this year at the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery. On a broader scope I hope to continue developing my work and collaborating with many more amazing people.
