On the Couch with Joshua Robson

Josh-Robson-AAR-On-the-CouchWho is Joshua Robson?
Joshua Robson is an Australian professional performer and producer, currently playing the role of THE PHANTOM in Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour’s The Phantom of the Opera. A lover of AFL (St Kilda Saints), NBA (LA Clippers), coffee and donuts.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I currently hold a Masters of Teaching (Secondary) degree and my Victorian Teaching License. So, if I wasn’t incredibly passionate about maintaining my position within the entertainment industry, I would turn my efforts to inspiring and teaching our next generation of artists!

Who inspires you and why?
Creatively, lots of people. Most recognisable would be Lin-Manuel Miranda. I love how he puts himself 100% into any creative project that comes his way, be it writing, performing, directing or producing. That is the kind of artist that I strive to be here in Australia. My daily inspiration would be my fiancée, Ash Rigg. I have never met a person more selfless than her, and her selflessness allows me to follow my dreams; she is my inspiration for doing everything I do.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Equality in any capacity is how I’d like to make a difference. Particularly through my own production company. Fairness and justice is what it’s all about.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Italy. The food, the wine, the scenery, the history. An amazing country and amazing culture

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Coogee Beach and Coogee Pavillion. My favourite of the Sydney beaches and Coogee Pav is great on a sunny Sunday afternoon with a cocktail or beer!

What are you currently reading?
Reading Lin-Manuel’s In the Heights book. Much like his Hamilton book, it breaks down his creative process from start to end and his lyrical process and intention throughout each song.

What are you currently listening to?
Music. Ben Abraham. His new album Friendly Fire is extraordinary. Podcast. The Lighthouse. A true crime podcast about the backpacker that went missing in Byron Bay

Happiness is?
Why we do everything we do is to achieve some sort of happiness. Whether that is sharing a hug with a loved one, laughing and drinking with mates, kicking career goals or listening to your favourite song. Without the promise of happiness it is hard to be resilient in trying times.

What does the future hold for you?
2022 holds a lot of unfinished business for me. Performing again in my first lead role. Producing again at the Hayes, Bonnie and Clyde which has been postponed 3 times and finally putting it on in June 2022. Getting married to the love of my life, we have postponed our wedding four times and can’t wait to finally go through with the wedding we have been anticipating since pre-COVID.
