On the Couch with Jorja Cadence

Jorja-Cadence-AAR-On-the-CouchWho is Jorja Cadence?
An Aussie actor and semi-recognisable real* redhead who you may know from shows like Rabbit Hole (Paramount+) and Sex/Life (Netflix).

What would you do differently from what you do now?
If I wasn’t in the film and television industry at all, I’d probably be a psychologist. I’d also make a good celebrant. Or a teacher. Wow, all of those sound far more reliable than acting – maybe I should switch careers…

Who inspires you and why?
I really admire actors who dabble in producing, or who do a bit of writing/creating on top of acting – like Margot Robbie, Elle Fanning, and Quinta Brunson. I graduated from the UTS Media Arts and Production program and for a while I envisioned my life as a boss lady/producer. I’d still like to steer down that path some day, once I’ve really nailed this acting thing.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Something simple, like smiling at more people on the street. Corny, I know – but our default tends to be to disengage from strangers and I often wonder why? Why is riding in an elevator so darn awkward? I think there’s a lot to be gained by sharing a friendly moment with others. When someone smiles at me, it only brightens my day. I’d like to implement that more, and hopefully influence someone’s lived experience in a positive way. Sometimes small things make a huge difference.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
As the daughter of a flight attendant, the travel bug runs deep. I’ve visited so many awesome destinations, but somehow can’t keep myself from returning to New York. The buzz is incomparable and I feel at home there. One trip, I was strolling down Madison Avenue having only just landed when THREE different tourists asked me – a presumed local – for directions. I shocked even myself by actually being able to answer them. Because I just love that city so much. Also, Broadway. And pizza.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
“Town” for me is Byron Bay, so of course my friends love coming to visit! Maybe too much? Kidding… When I’m playing tour guide, I head straight to the Cape Byron Lighthouse walk. From there you get the best view of Byron town, while passing through iconic beaches. Almost every time I spot wildlife like dolphins and wallabies. My international friends lose it!

What are you currently reading?
I debated admitting this, but I’m actually nearly finished a re-read of the Twilight series. I’m currently at the climax of Breaking Dawn. It has been wild (and a little shocking) reading the series through my adult eyes, compared to my sassy tween perspective the first time around. But it’s a guilty pleasure. I low-key want to move to Forks.

What are you currently listening to?
Dad-music. I love it. Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Steely Dan – sign me UP!

Happiness is?
A really good movie that makes you laugh, cry, and shriek… that takes you to a place beyond this stratosphere. Ideally, watching said movie surrounded by loved ones. Pure joy!

What does the future hold for you?
I’m currently living in Toronto but my goal is to work more in Australia. I love being abroad but there’s nothing like getting to use my good ‘ole Aussie accent. Plus, bringing my mum to set would be so cool! In terms of upcoming projects, you can catch me in Priscilla, Sofia Coppola’s new flick with A24 – coming this October. It’s going to be so beautiful and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.

Jorja can be seen as Patsy Presley in Priscilla – written and directed by Sofia Coppola – which is due for release later this year. For more information, visit: www.a24films.com for details.
