Who is Jonathan Hickey?
I am a singer actor, based in Brisbane. Outside of performing I love the outdoors; cycling, surfing and trying to catch fish. I also love writing music and gigging with my family band Chinatown Carpark.
What would you do differently to what you do now?
Not much to be honest as I’m pretty happy with my journey so far. When I was younger, I considered becoming a vet, but when I got into the QCGU music theatre course post school, I began my music theatre journey and haven’t looked back.
Who inspires you and why?
Stephen Pasquale is an idol of mine, he’s a music theatre performer and screen actor in the US. His voice is phenomenal, I love his work in Bridges of Madison County and the fact that he’s able to cross over into different genres.
What would I do to make a difference in this world?
I believe what we do can make a difference in the world. My first contract out of Uni was school touring with Opera Qld & Shake & Stir, bringing theatre to kids in rural communities and some of these kids had never seen live theatre. I’ve seen first-hand the positive effects theatre can have on not only kids out rural but audiences all over Australia. It’s uplifting, joyous and brings people together. I’d love to continue telling stories and bringing joy to people through the magic of theatre.
Favourite holiday destination?
Favourite holiday destination would have to be Positano on the Amalfi Coast. Italy. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in Italy over the years and love the Italian culture and laid-back lifestyle. The coastline is stunning, and I get to visit my mate Antonio and we have a jolly time.
When friends come to town what attractions would you take them to and why?
I usually take my friends to either Noosa or anywhere on the Gold Coast/Byron Bay Area, the beaches are stunning. Favourite spot in town would have to be West End, has a real community vibe and there’s lots of great cafés, bars and restaurants.
What are you currently reading?
I’m currently immersing myself in the script for Titanic! I’m also reading the Rules of Attraction which was recommended to me by a friend.
What am I currently listening to?
I’ve had the original Titanic Broadway recording on repeat the last few weeks. But lots of different bands/artists. The new Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs album is a current favourite of mine.
Happiness is?
Happiness is getting to spend time with family and friends.
What does the future for you?
I’d love to do some more international travel now that the borders have re-opened. And also continue to work in theatre both in Australia and internationally.
