Who is John O’Hara?
An actor, singer, radio host, writer, marriage celebrant, son, brother, uncle and kick arse friend!
What would you do differently to what you do now?
Stress less! I’m trying now, as I approach 40 to roll with the tides a little more. It’s a much nicer place to be. Things work out the way they should right? Right?
Who inspires you and why?
I’ve found that as I’ve gotten older, the people in my life become a smaller and more select group of people. Family becomes more than just biological obligation. My family in all its forms inspire me everyday. Especially this year. Some of my chosen family have stood up and led change in ways that will shape the future of our industry this year. It’s very inspiring. And my mum Val, she inspires us ALL.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Listen, learn and be mindful. I know it sounds simple, but I can definitely do better, and I think it makes a huge difference on a daily basis to so many.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Oh this is so hard! If you want to party, Barcelona. If you want to be glamorous, Cannes. If you want to chill, Byron Bay. I’ve spent a lot of time in all three and I love them equally.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I’m originally a Perth boy so I love being back there and showing people around. To eat, visits to Bread In Common, Little Creatures and Bib And Tucker, all in Fremantle, are musts. A swim at one of our gorgeous beaches and watching the sunset with fish’n’chips wrapped in butcher’s paper is compulsory… Cottesloe is my favourite. And if we have time, Margaret River for wine and cheese.
What are you currently reading?
I actually just finished reading Joel Creasey’s book. He’s a Perth boy too and I’m a big fan – so I loved it!
What are you currently listening to?
I’m currently listening to the rehearsal tracks for #VAL. It’s a one man show so there’s a lot of notes and lyrics to learn… and also Jonathan Van Ness’s podcast Getting Curious.
Happiness is?
My niece and nephew, Poppy and Finn, being excited to have me home. I don’t see them nearly enough so I relish my time with them. They make me laugh and remind me that life is simpler than we think.
What does the future hold for you?
The future is bright! Firstly, #VAL will have its world premiere season in Perth and will then hopefully tour. I start rehearsals for School of Rock the musical – where I’ll play Ned Schneebly in Melbourne in October, and I’m on the hunt for a husband… apply within!
