On the Couch with JOF

Joseph O'Farrell (JOF) AAR On the CouchWho is JOF?
Joseph O’Farrell (JOF) is an eater of chips and maker of art. I make large-scale installation / theatre works with, and for, community that celebrates our diversity and brings people together in hilarious and unlikely situations. I feel very lucky to tour the world as an artist and musician.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
Learn piano! I am a stereotypical drummer with absolutely no musical talent. I wish I could play a melodic instrument. That said, I’m pretty OK on the kazoo, so it ain’t all bad.

Who inspires you and why?
Bruce Springsteen. I am obsessed with THE BOSS. An incredible artist who never lets ego get in the way of his art. He is generous to his fans and continues to create work on a prolific scale, a shining example of a great artist. I’m gonna stop there because I’m obsessed… but if anyone gets the chance to see the E-Street band play live… DO IT! But seriously though, you should!

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I feel very privileged to do what I do and I love to make work with the community around me. I believe in an inclusive arts practice that gives people, who might not normally be seen or heard, a voice, and a platform to share their experience and express their ideas.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Glasgow. I love that rainy town, their art and music scene and all those second hand record stores!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Parma and pot at the Napier Hotel. I love that pub and it’s always one of the first places I go when I’m back in town.

What are you currently reading?
Return of the Mummy by R.L. Stine. Goosebumps! What a classic series and classic tale of teen angst, ancient archeology and true horror!

What are you currently listening to?
Bruce Springsteen all day and all night!

Happiness is?
My family. I feel so lucky to have such incredibly supportive parents and siblings. We laugh, drink and barbeque together, they are a constant source of joy and love. Shout outs to COF, POF, DOFFA, NOFFA and JULESA!

What does the future hold for you?
I cannot wait to premiere my new work, The Cabin! A theatre / horror show written by kids for adults at Northcote Town Hall. It’s going to be Wild! I then get on a plane to tour to Dublin and begin working as a co-artistic director at an arts festival in Norway.

JOF is the Leading Artist and Performer in The Cabin! – which will be presented at Northcote Town Hall from 3 July 2019. For more information, visit: www.darebinarts.com.au for details.
