Who is Joel Granger?
An actor, singer, strong mover, desperate to find other hobbies that make my career not the only part of my identity.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
Stay in ballet classes longer, learn how to properly play an instrument, and stop colouring my hair in high school.
Who inspires you and why?
My Mum. She constantly displays unwavering generosity and selflessness to everyone around her, as well as knowing how to connect with strangers instantly. I grew up as a self-absorbed only child, so they certainly aren’t qualities I naturally possess.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I love to make people laugh, and I’m very lucky that’s a big part of my work. If I can make people a little bit more joyful, I’m thrilled (and validated, if they have a particularly hearty laugh). And “World Peace” or any other quote from Miss Congeniality.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
I recently went to Europe and Paris was definitely my favourite. Although I realised that all seven years of learning French in high school amounted to was being able to ask, Where is the library?
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. It’s truly one of the only things I’ll risk sun exposure for, and the closest I’ll get to going to the beach.
What are you currently reading?
I’m thrilled to be asked this question while I happen to be in the middle of reading a book that makes me sound more intelligent than I am. Butter by Azako Yuzuki, translated from its original Japanese publication, about the prevalence and ridiculousness of misogyny in contemporary society.
What are you currently listening to?
I’ve found myself going through a phase of listening to a lot of 80’s music lately. I don’t know whether that makes me quirky and retro, or deeply uncool.
Happiness is?
Going to bed without setting an alarm. Uncontrollable giggling. The first bite of dessert, knowing you still have the whole thing left. And being surrounded by the people I love.
What does the future hold for you?
I’m currently rehearsing Benny Southstreet in Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour’s production of Guys and Dolls. It’s my second year performing outdoors on the Harbour, and therefore my second year of tax-deductible sunscreen.
Joel stars as Benny Southstreet in Opera Australia’s Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour’s production of Guys and Dolls – which plays the Fleet Steps, Mrs Macquaries Point, from 21 March 2025. For more information, visit: www.opera.org.au for details.
