On the Couch with Joe Kalou

Joe Kalou AAR On the CouchWho is Joe Kalou?
Joe Kalou is a dreadlocked actor who’s done everything from being in a kids band with a TV show to standing naked on the Opera House stage and everything in between. (Note: the opera house thing was NOT while I was in the kids band)

What would you do differently from what you do now?
If performance was not an option in any capacity, I’d likely pursue a career in either filmmaking (behind the camera) or songwriting. However, for something totally different I’d pursue a career as an athlete. My grandad on mum’s side was a boxer and cricketer and my dad was a rugby player… so competitive sport is in my blood.

Who inspires you and why?
I’m inspired by the actor Mahershala Ali… such phenomenal range and Ben Harper for his songwriting. Excellent storytellers in a nutshell.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Keep moving on the journey I’m on. Make people feel something in a story I tell through a performance of mine in one way or another.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Definitely Fiji… that’s where my heritage stems from. There’s nothing like going back to the village and singing songs around the kava bowl ‘til the wee hours of the morning!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I’d take them for a long walk along the river. There are beautiful restaurants and cafes along there. Not to mention, there’s always something going on in the heart of Melbourne. I also love Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre. So whatever’s on there works too.

What are you currently reading?
Rainbow History Class by Hannah McElhinney. It’s a really great read. And the person that bought it means a lot to me… so there’s that incentive also.

What are you currently listening to?
Drake is a staple. Ben Harper like I mentioned before. I find myself listening to a bit of Flewnt and also, Onefour recently too. Probably due to the recent documentary.

Happiness is?
“In the work you’re avoiding”. I think that sums it up pretty well. Living your life to its full potential. Sharing what you have with the world. Your work should reflect your gift. After all, “talent is nothing without work”.

What does the future hold for you?
Storytelling through different lenses and media. More screen work that’s for sure. Stay tuned 🙂
