Who is Jen McAuliffe?
I’m a writer, a devoted lover of potatoes in all their glorious forms, a music enthusiast, and an all-round admirer of the arts.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I wish I had started creating straight out of university, simply for the joy and fulfilment of it, instead of waiting for a clear path to appear. I’ve learned that the path is something you create for yourself.
Who inspires you and why?
Shonda Rhimes inspires me because she faced repeated doubts in a tough industry and kept going. She created shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, built Shondaland, and opened doors for diverse storytelling – proving that persistence and belief in your own voice can overcome any ‘no.’ Anyone who keeps going in the face of NO!
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I want to tell stories that make people feel seen and heard, stories that spark empathy and remind us how connected we really are. And if I could, I would end period poverty; I try in my own small way, but I know it’s a huge issue affecting so many.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
New York City – I love immersing myself in its arts, from the buzzing theatres to the inspiring galleries. At the same time, I crave a touch of nature, which is why I’m equally drawn to the wide-open beauty of Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
When friends visit, I take them along the Great Ocean Road and to ACMI. The coastal drive is a breathtaking journey, and ACMI is a fantastic institute celebrating film and the moving image.
What are you currently reading?
I’ve been reading a lot of screenplays lately and revisiting some of Hubert Selby Jr.’s work, like Last Exit to Brooklyn. I love diving into his gritty, raw worlds.
What are you currently listening to?
50 Lions, The Amity Affliction, Paul Dempsey, NIN and Lady Gaga.
Happiness is?
Happiness is lying under the stars, enjoying good food, wandering in nature, munching on chips, being surrounded by friends who love you just as you are, and a good guitar solo.
What does the future hold for you?
The future holds stories I haven’t written yet, theatre lights and curtain calls, plenty of Broadway and West End visits and scripts for film and TV… AND CHIPS!
Jen has written and directed Chip On Her Shoulder – which plays at the Explosives Factory, St Kilda from 7 – 11 October, as part of the 2025 Melbourne Fringe Festival. For more information, visit: www.melbournefringe.com.au for details.
