On the Couch with Jayme Jo Massoud

Jayme Jo Massoud AAR On the CouchWho is Jayme Jo Massoud?
I am a Sydney-based Australian Lebanese singer, dancer, actress and online personality. I have a deep love for the arts and grew up dancing competitively before being swept away by musical theatre which I am now completely devoted to.

I live out my culture in everything I do with deep ties to my heritage and share my life as a performer, curly girl and foodie with my online community. I value using this platform to inspire the younger generation to chase their dreams and be unapologetically themselves. My multifaceted life brings me so much variety and fun, every single day is different!

What would you do differently from what you do now?
In an alternate universe I have always believed I would be a physiotherapist or chiropractor. I love anatomy, helping people and working with my hands. However, I can’t imagine not being involved in the arts. I can also see myself being a florist or doing something whimsy and creative.

Who inspires you and why?
In the least cheesy way possible, my mum. She shows me resilience, beauty and a constant outpouring of love which drives me forward each day. I also am extremely inspired by the Old Hollywood movie stars like Gene Kelly and Vera Ellen. Their movement quality and attention to detail have truly shaped musical theatre.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Besides big dreams of safety, food and peace, in my day-to-day life I really love teaching and inspiring self belief in people. Whether that’s accepting their curly hair, teaching theatre students to believe in their craft or paving the way for other women who look like me to enter this industry, I know each small act works together to make life more joyful for all.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
My family and I have been holidaying on the central coast for as long as I can remember. The beaches are beautiful, relaxing and extremely nostalgic for me, so I love to get back there at the end of every year.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Sydney is undeniably gorgeous and full of the best food and theatre! I would take them around our gorgeous city and harbour, for a feed at Restaurant Hubert and then to Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour – The Phantom of the Opera. That would be the perfect day out.

What are you currently reading?
During rehearsal and show time, I am usually so consumed by the work that I struggle to read especially as a dyslexic girl, but over summer I loved reading the Bronze Horseman, a classic for any romance lover like me.

What are you currently listening to?
I have Laufey’s new album on repeat and Leon Bridges as well as The Phantom of the Opera album which is currently on a never-ending loop in my mind… even sleep brings to reprieve.

Happiness is?
To me happiness is anywhere with my family, food, gift giving, music, dancing, flowers, sunshine and laughter.

What does the future hold for you?
After playing Meg Girgy in Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour – The Phantom of the Opera there will always be endless auditions, but I know for sure the stage, travel and creation is waiting for me no matter what!
