Who is Jay Gold?
I’m Jay Gold! A gender fluid actor, visual artist and a (very occasional) writer. I have been extremely fortunate to play Djuna, one of two actors in Bullet Heart Club’s collaboration with Eva Rees, DJUNA. A trans thriller opening mid-March!
What would you do differently from what you do now?
Apart from acting and drawing, I’ve always been interested in cooking. I love creating dishes of my own and reimagining existing recipes. That or directing theatre, but I would have a lot of learning to do first!
Who inspires you and why?
It’s a cliché, but my strongest inspirations and creative motivation come from my beautifully talented and fabulous friends. My close circle consists of actors of course, and other femme individuals who all have their own niche. Coming together brings a never dull conversation. I am consistently inspired by all the women in my life, my wonderful mother included.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
If I had a shot at making a real difference, I would hope it came from the theatre I partake in and the art I make. Education is not only crucial in life, but it is life changing. I believe that theatre in particular, has always been a catalyst for change and disruption. I aspire to shed light on untold stories, ones that help people realise something about themselves and/or the world around them.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
I have been lucky enough to explore Italy. I found it wonderful, overwhelming and inspiring. I would love to go back some day and spend a decent amount of time there.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I would take them to Cinema Nova on a Monday night or Westgarth on Tuesdays, the cheap tickets bring people of all ages together. Usually in packed out theatres. It is such a joy to sit in a theatre of people watching a film, I find that the sheer size of audiences like that are rare and make unforgettable experiences.
What are you currently reading?
My scripts! I am currently doing two theatre shows, both scripts have majority of my (erratic) attention at the moment.
What are you currently listening to?
I love K-Pop! My rotation mainly consists of the bands Ive, NJZ, BLACKPINK and XG. I am also enjoying F.K.A Twigs new album Eusexua, as well as Ethel Cain and Caroline Polachek consistently.
Happiness is?
Happiness for me can be quite simple. I usually find it at my studio desk, drawing and listening to podcasts for hours. That or a dinner party, massive soft spot for an excuse to cook/drink/eat with my loved ones.
What does the future hold for you?
Gosh, well if I could write it, it would see me being a part of art and theatre consistently. Where I can continue to support myself and indulge in the privilege of artistry as a career.
Jay can be seen in Eva Rees’ new trans thriller, DJUNA – which will be presented at the Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre from 12 March 2025. For more information, visit: www.arts.darebin.vic.gov.au for details.
